GARNANT Golf Club has closed amid rumours it has gone into receivership.

The course was taken on from Carmarthenshire County Council by Wrexham-based Clay’s Golf in September 2011.

Managing director Steve Williams described acquiring the spectacular mountainside course as “a dream come true”.

Clay’s took out a 25-year lease and subsidy to run and manage the golf course and clubhouse with the creation of 10 new jobs.

The lease had a reducing subsidy from £80,000 in each of the first two years to the local authority to non-subsidy and a percentage income share from year six.

The 120-acre site was created in the mid 1990’s at a cost of almost £1million on land that was formerly part of the Garnant Opencast coal mine.

It has been described as the best municipal golf course in Wales with magnificent views of the Black and Betws Mountains from its club house and fairways.

Three years ago County Hall undertook a review of all its leisure services and agreed the club ould be leased off to the best bidder who would ensure its future and development.

“If these reports are correct it would be an utter catastrophe for the Amman Valley,” said county councillor Colin Evans. “It is a popular venue and it would be an absolute tragedy if it closes.”

A county council spokeswoman said they were awaiting an update. “We cannot comment further,” she said.

Clay's Golf have not provided a comment.
