A new revolutionary mobile library fleet will take to the roads in Carmarthenshire in two weeks.
Three new vehicles will deliver a ‘more than books’ approach and visit at least 38 communities across the county every week starting from August 1.
The new service, operating under the brand, “Your Library, Your Opportunity, Your Place was launched today at Pontyberem and will provide digital services directly to community users with access online via the Mobile Library's free Wi-Fi, keeping users connected to the greater community and the wider world at large.
The current mobile service falls short on delivering key aspects of a modern library service offered at static service points.
Residents will be able to access photocopying and printing facilities, a range of services including universal credit, citizen’s advice and even job searching opportunities under the new service.
The fleet will allow for a more, flexible, fit for purpose, and integrated mobile service that looks to address rural deprivation, digital inclusion, poverty and literacy agendas, all of which are critical to the wellbeing of our residents as well as a life line for residents who are elderly or housebound.
Executive board member for rural affairs, Cllr Cefin Campbell said: “Rural regeneration is a key priority for me, Carmarthenshire is a very rural county and each community has its own particular needs and issues.
“The new mobile libraries will certainly bring benefits to these communities and give them access to a service they previously did not enjoy.”
New routes have been added following public consultations and all stops will display signage.
The council’s executive board member for leisure, Cllr Peter Hughes-Griffiths said: “This exciting new service is teeming with technology and will help meet the demands of our customers in this ever changing digital world. Our new mobile libraries are now delivering more than just books to our residents’ doorsteps and they will make a huge difference in our rural communities.”
