A GWENDRAETH Valley group is leading the way in a bid to reduce carbon emissions as part of an ambitious nationwide project.
The aim of 10:10 is to unite every sector of British society behind one simple idea: that by working together we can achieve a 10% cut in the UK’s carbon emissions by 2010.
Menter Cwm Gwendraeth has decided to be the first community development and Welsh language organisation to work towards reducing its emissions in line with the bold targets set out by climate experts.
Menter Cwm Gwendraeth’s area director Deris Williams said: “Being part of this innovative campaign is a chance for us to use our links within the communities of Carmarthenshire to help others identify changes that need to happen urgently in response to the join threats of climate change and peak oil.
“As part of Menter Cwm Gwendraeth’s Zero Carbon Communities project – and in partnership with Carmarthenshire Council and the Energy Agency – officers will assist community groups to plan a route towards a low carbon future.
“It will also give a strong message to elected representatives that urgent and brave actions need to happen.”
Deris Williams added: “Civilisation is at a crossroad with a choice to make about its own future.
“Dramatic changes need to be made in the way that government, business and communities manage carbon, energy, soil, water and resources.
“Despite the incredible seriousness of the situation, there is no plan or vision that’s clear enough to produce the solutions that are needed.”
