THE Labour Party in Carmarthenshire has chosen Christine Gwyther as their candidate for the parliamentary seat of Carmarthen East and Dinefwr. She was selected by the local membership on Saturday evening at the Miners’ Welfare Hall in Ammanford.
“I am delighted to have been selected to fight this important seat,” she said. “We already have some brilliant representation here in terms of town, community and county councillors, but we need to bring the parliamentary seat back home to Labour.
“My background is in economic development within local government. I was born and brought up in West Wales, went to University College Cardiff and then worked in London.
“But West Wales is where it’s at and I was lucky enough to come home and get a job in my mid-twenties.
“In 1999, I was elected to the Assembly representing Carmarthen West and went straight into government as rural affairs minister and went on to chair the economic development and transport committee.
“I lost my seat to the Tories in 2007 but have remained fully engaged in West Wales issues, working part-time for Alun Davies AM and campaigning on a voluntary basis.
“This constituency needs a strong, steady and experienced voice at Westminster... and I want to be in there fighting hard for the people of Carmarthen East and Dinefwr.”
