AMMANFORD town councillors have had their hackles raised by a letter from Carmarthenshire county council concerning the town's motte and bailey castle.
The local authority had agreed to sell the castle - situated in the grounds of Cartref residential home in Tirydail Lane - to the town council for a nominal sum of £1.
But members were alarmed to receive a solicitors letter indicating they would be expected to build an access road into the site and maintain a fence as part of the deal.
A letter from Steadman, Jones and Bell Solicitors also stated: "On completion of the transfer of the Motte and Bailey monument to the town council the local authority are now insisting that this covenant is assigned to the town council, but the benefit of it will remain with them."
Town clerk Miriam Phillips felt the town council simply could not agree to such terms.
"It's the road that worries me," she said. "It would cost us an arm and a leg."
Town mayor Irena Hopkins was equally unhappy. "The county council have moved the goalposts and that's just not right," she said.
County councillor Huw Evans said he would pursue the matter at County Hall.
