Mair Hitchings 1935 - 2021 It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Mair Hitchings on Sunday 7th February. Born and raised in Glanamman, Mair trained as a nurse in Morriston hospital, beginning her career as a midwife, before turning to geriatric and palliative care. In 1972, Mair was appointed Matron of the newly opened care home in Tirydail, Ammanford, a position that she proudly held for over 25 years. Mair's life was devoted to caring for others. In her retirement from a career in the care sector, Mair started a number of support groups in the town, including a branch of the British Heart Foundation, The Stroke Support group and the Heart-to-Heart fitness group. She also pursued other interests, including qualifying as a reflexologist. During their time as town councillors, both Mair and her beloved husband, Godfrey, were bestowed the honour of Mayor of Ammanford. During Mair's second term in office, she had the privilege of signing the Twinning Charter, on behalf of Ammanford, with Breuillet, France. A devout member, and Deacon, at Christian Temple, Ammanford, Mair was also an active member of the Ammanford Choral Society. Mair was a devoted mother to John and Liz, and a proud grandmother to Oliver and Lydia. She will be greatly missed by her family and her community. The family wishes to thank those who cared for Mair in her later years, including the staff of Carmarthenshire County Council, the Welsh Ambulance Service, and Brynteg Surgery, for their kindness and support. Sadly, due to the current COVID-19 restrictions, there will be a short family service at Llanelli Crematorium, on Friday 5th March. The funeral cortege will be leaving her home at High Street, Ammanford at 12.15pm for anyone wishing to pay their respects. A live webcast of the service will be available, for further enquiries please contact the funeral directors. The family have requested that in lieu of flowers, donations made to The British Heart Foundation, the charity Mair served for so many years would be most fitting and gratefully received.
