AN AMMANFORD grandfather has said he fears it will take the death of a child to get traffic calming measures installed on Pantyffynnon Road.

Alfred Broome, aged 72, had urged Carmarthenshire county council’s highways department to place a 20mph limit near the park after he was horrified to see motorists speeding along the stretch between New Road and Mill Terrace.

But following a site meeting with representatives of the local authority, Mr Broome discovered there is little chance of the measures he says are needed appearing any time soon.

“I was told there was not enough money in the pot to spend on the road this year,” he said.

“Do we have to wait for a serious accident or even worse before anything is done?”

“There is a popular children’s playground in Pantyffynnon that the kids from Parcyrhun constantly use.

“My own eight-year-old grand-daughter lives nearby and regularly uses the park.

I’m very worried.

“It seems we will have to wait until a child is killed before anything happens.”

Mr Broome also believes disabled access to the park needs to be improved.

“There is currently no disabled crossing,” he said.

“Myself and local residents had hoped that the highways department would place a raised speed bump across the road that will not only reduce speeding but also be used as a disabled crossing point too.

“Sadly I’m not holding out much hope.”

Carmarthenshire County Council had no comment.
