THE committee which has kept Brynaman’s swimming pool afloat is being dissolved amid fears the 80-year-old lido may never re-open.
A meeting is being held at the Black Mountain Centre on Monday at 7pm in the hope of attracting a fresh committee.
Built by miners in the early 1930s, the pool – the last open-air lido in Wales – closed in the summer of 2010 after receiving a £20,000 repair bill.
Although funding was obtained from the local authority, the Welsh Assembly and WREN, the pool seemingly remains in limbo.
Jackie Bird, vice-chairman of the Brynaman Swimming Pool Association has revealed there are now just two committee members remaining. “We’ve run out of steam,” she said.
“We’ve been told the cost of repairs will be far higher than was first thought.
“When we submitted a business plan to the county council we were told it wasn’t good enough.
“As a group we’ve all worked very hard and done all we can.
“The kids are asking when is it going to re-open - it’s heartbreaking. I went down there the other day and cried. It’s all overgrown, doors have been kicked in and windows are missing.”
A county council spokesman said: “The pool will not be open in 2013, and is now a community development / asset transfer issue if the local committee wish to take it forward.
“We are not sure if they do because we have not had any contact since last year.”
