A former Llansawel man has appeared before magistrates to deny charges of racially abusing a police officer and a fast-food worker.

Michael John Phillips, who previously lived at Derwen Deg but gave his address in court as Belvedere Avenue in Carmarthen, pleaded not guilty to causing racially aggravated alarm or distress to takeaway worker Tanju Tunk and PC Jamie Fleig during an incident in Carmarthen on April 20.

Phillips stands accused of directing a foul-mouthed racist tirade at Mr Tunk, who is Turkish.

When PC Fleig, an Englishman arrived on the scene, Phillips is accused of turning his foul-mouthed ire in the officer’s direction, allegedly labelling him “a Sais”.

In addition to the two charges of racially-aggravated harassment, Phillips also denied a charge of simple harassment against both men.

Mike Reed, defending, told magistrates the case was suitable for their jurisdiction.

“He has been back to the shop in question and they are happy to serve him,” he told the court.

He added that Phillips would consider changing his plea should the court be willing to withdraw the racially-aggravated charges.

Magistrates adjourned the case until September 16 when Phillips is due to stand trial.
