A pair of intrepid Amman Valley fundraisers are gearing up for the challenge of a life-time as they look to raise £10,000 for charity.

Best pals Lisa Chan, from Glanaman, and Harriet Webb, of Tycroes, are currently in training to scale Mount Kilimanjaro in aid of the Golau Cancer Foundation.

The daring duo, both 30, have been close friends since their school days at Amman Valley Comprehensive and are due to climb the highest peak in Africa in February 2014.

“It’s going to be a huge challenge for us,” said Harriet, who now works at Ysgol Dyffryn Aman.

“We wanted to give something back to the community and cancer care is something very close to both our hearts. Everyone now knows someone or has a close family member affected by the disease.”

“We are determined to climb it and raise as much money as we can for cancer care,” said Lisa, who will be overcome her own personal battle with ill health when she completes the climb having personally struggled against serious illness for the past six years.

“This will be a real personal challenge for, but I know I can do it and may I can also be an example to overcome their difficulties.

“We decided to raise money for Golau because it is important to use that our efforts are to benefit our own community. Golau is the cancer charity based in and for the people of south-west Wales.”

The pair are already in training for their Conquer Kili and Conquer Cancer expedition.

As part of their preparation they will climb Penyfan on Tuesday before turning their attention to Snowdon in October.

As well as gym sessions and training, the pair have also been busy getting sponsorship and arranging fundraising events.

They will be hosting a charity band night at Tycroes RFC on October 12 with performances from P’tcheaow! and Son of One Eye.

Tickets costs £5 and are available from Tycroes RFC, Manford House Chinese Restaurant, Glanaman, Treats, Ammanford, and of course from Lisa and Harriet themselves. Tickets, costing £6, will also be available on the door.

The pair also have numerous other events lined up to boost their fundraising and are confident of scaling both Mount Kilimanjaro and their massive £10,000 target.

“It’s a lot to raise, but we have set a high target and we are going to achieve,” said Harriet.

“It is going to be a massive adventure and a huge challenge, but we are both very excited about it,” said Lisa.
