A Tycroes county councillor has called for a safety audit to be carried out on the main road through the village.

Councillor Calum Higgins has joined forces with Llanelli AM Keith Davies in calling for an investigation into road safety along the A483 between Tycvroes and Pont Abraham, following a tragic fatal accident during bad weather earlier this year.

Mr Davies, whose constituency includes Tycroes, has written to Minster for Economy and Transport Edwina Hart stating:

“The road becomes drastically more dangerous when the weather deteriorates. The road may be safe when dry however a 60mph limit is not appropriate during heavy rain.”

Cllr Higgins has called for the speed limit to be lowered to at least 50mph, and wants a road surface and drainage assessment undertaken.

“A 60mph limit gives a false sense of security to drivers on the A483,” he said.

“I have requested that the South Wales Trunk Road Agency lowers the speed limit to at least 50mph, if not lower.

“The road also needs bad weather warning signs to warn drivers of weather conditions making the road unsafe.”

Both politicians hope that a road safety review will significantly reduce the chance of a serious accident, and rule out another fatality on the trunk road.

Bethan Davies, of Garnant, died following a road collision with a college bus on the road in atrocious conditions on January 29. While Amman Valley Comprehensive teacher David Knight also died in a fatal collision on the same stretch of the A483 on April 9, 2007.
