A SECTION of fencing repaired some weeks ago to protect people walking along the River Marlais bank has been vandalised again, dismayed Llandybie community councillors have learnt.

Technical officer Brian James said the damage was not the work of fishermen and said the area was a meeting place for teenagers.

"Does the council wish to repair the fence again?" he asked.

"I would say 'yes'," replied county councillor Anthony Davies. "It;s only a piece of wire at the end of the day and we need something to stop kids from falling in the river."

Chairman Peter Roberts pondered what would happen if the fence was not fixed and an accident happened, but Cllr Llinos Hindley questioned how long the authority could continue to carry out repairs.

"This is a question of safety – we need to do something," said county councillor Peter Cooper.

Mr James, who explained barbed wire could not be used on a footpath, said plain wire had been used to enable people to climb through without hindrance. "Yet they still come along and break it," he added.

It was agreed that the fence would be replaced.
