CARMARTHENSHIRE county council chiefs have confirmed parts of Ammanford will receive 20 mph zones as part of a £2.3-million pound grants package for major road safety projects throughout the county.

Cllr Colin Evans, county executive board member for engineering and transport services, said orders had now been issued for 20mph zones in Myddynfych and that the total cost would be £12,000 with £6,000 from developers' 106 monies matched with £6,000 from the authority’s internal budgets.

Cllr Evans said: “With five schools and playgrounds in the area we have driven this initiative to introduce 20mph zones about Church Street, Union Street, Y Gorsedd, Brynmawr Crescent and Avenue, Walter Road, Margaret Street and Oakfield Terrace.

“There is overwhelming support for this initiative. I know householders in Heol Llwyd have been particularly concerned at cars speeding through the community especially with a play area nearby.”

“Our transport teams have a first-class record of sourcing funding for these important schemes.

“I have to commend the transport officers who listen to members, communicate with communities and design programmes that attract more money than any other areas of Wales from Welsh Government for safe routes in the communities schemes.”

Traffic orders for the 20mph zones in central Ammanford have been applied for and any objections must be received by the county council in writing by this Friday (October 4).
