A LLANDYBIE man was asleep in bed when he heard a vehicle smash into his own car - only to get up and see the driver trying to get away, a court has heard.

Mike Smith, of Ammanford Road, was woken by the crash, which was caused by Ryan Watkin Thomas, of 54 Cwmfferws Road, Tycroes.

Mr Smith and members of his family ran out, only to see Thomas drive away - and crash again into an island in the middle of the road.

Iwan Jenkins, prosecuting, said Thomas tried to carry on driving before a member of Mr Smith's family told him that the front of the car had been caught on the island.

Mr Jenkins added: "The driver would not give any details and decided to run away before the police came."

The incident occurred in the early hours of July 28. Thomas was tracked down later that day.

"The defendant admitted he had been drinking," said Mr Jenkins.

"He says he had a pint of cider and a bottle of Budweiser and went to a friend's house before the accident happened."

Thomas was sentenced in his absence after pleading guilty by letter to failing to stop after an accident.

He was fined £150, with five penalty points, and £55 costs.
