Labour candidate Calum Higgins has vowed to be a local voice in a UK government if elected to represent the Carmarthen East and Dinefwr seat at Westminster.

Speaking ahead of polling day, Mr Higgins said, if elected, he would use his position to bring together all sides of the political spectrum to bring about a better quality of life in Carmarthenshire and fight to bring increased investment to the county.

“As a local born and bred candidate, I will do everything in my power to bring investment and jobs to Carmarthenshire,” said Higgins.

“If elected I would be a local voice in a party that can form the UK Government, and I would use this influence to prioritise jobs and infrastructure investment in our county.

“I want to achieve a better standard of jobs than the current minimum wage and zero-hour contracts, and I want Carmarthen East and Dinefwr to see the benefit of an economic recovery. A recovery in the economy should be felt by everyone, including people who have worked hard to pay their mortgages and taxes.

“I will also campaign for our railways to be not for profit and for investment in the Heart of Wales line. I support the re-opening of the Carmarthen to Aberystwyth line and want to achieve investment in our rail services to bring tourism and work to rural parts of Wales by improving our transport network.

“To better services in Carmarthen East and Dinefwr we need a better deal for Wales. I want to achieve more funding for Wales and more devolution so decisions that affect Wales are made in Wales. We can achieve devolution of ‘fracking’ decisions, community policing, and larger energy projects, for decisions to be made locally.

“The way to achieve all this is to put aside local party political bickering.

“If elected, I will use my position to bring people together from across the community, rather than snipe at other politicians.

“I will work with all local representatives and focus on achieving the one thing that really matters: Creating a better quality of life for people in Carmarthenshire.”
