Let’s make Carmarthenshire matter – that’s the message from Plaid Cymru’s Jonathan Edwards as we enter the closing stages of the general election campaign.
Speaking just days before polling stations open on Thursday Jonathan Edwards said the campaign in Carmarthen East and Dinefwr had left him in no doubt that Carmarthenshire needs a strong voice in Westminster to take on the London elite.
Speaking ahead of polling day, the Plaid Cymru candidate said:
“Over the last five years I’ve sat in the House of Commons looking across at a row of Labour millionaires and a row of Tory millionaires. Not one of them appreciates the special place Carmarthenshire is or understands the different needs of both our rural and urban communities.
“I’ve prided myself on being an accessible MP, holding surgeries and public meetings all year round, but this general election campaign has really shown me how local residents are fed up with being ignored by the Westminster elite.
“My priority in London – if I have the honour of being returned as the Member of Parliament – will be to fight both those Labour and Tory millionaires to ensure Wales gets full parity of funding with Scotland. That would mean an additional £1.2billion each and every year to invest in our schools, hospitals and transport. Why should we settle for anything less than this simple principle of equality?
“More locally, I will continue to be a champion for the powerless against the powerful. Just like my efforts to protect our local fire stations, I will not stand by and allow our post offices to be closed or our police helicopter to be scrapped or see our roads, infrastructure and businesses ignored. I want to connect Carmarthenshire, delivering broadband and mobile phone signals to every one of our communities.
“Maintaining integrity, challenging damaging austerity and providing an alternative, positive politics which sees investment in our public services will continue to be the guiding principles of my work.
“In this highly uncertain election, there’s only one way to ensure a strong voice for Wales. So, let’s make Carmarthenshire matter in this election. Put your faith in me once again to be Carmarthenshire’s voice in Westminster.”
