FEARS that someone could be killed by traffic speeding past Ammanford's Wilkinson store have been raised by residents and Ammanford councillors.

John Owen, of Fynnon Las, said someone is going to be seriously injured unless traffic calming measures are introduced outside the store.

"A crossing was earmarked on the original plans," said the 58-year-old. "But the planning department at Carmarthenshire Council told me it was dropped because it would not have been viable so close to a level crossing."

Mr Owen said he has visions of a child or pensioner being killed unless something is done.

"I dread to think what could happen," he said. "I have suggested that the council put speed bumps or introduce a 20mph speed limit outside the store to ensure the public can cross safely.

"The cars do speed along that road so Carmarthenshire Council do need to act quickly."

Ammanford county councillor Hugh Evans confirmed that a traffic crossing had been earmarked for the road.

"At present the road is becoming more dangerous by the day," said councillor Evans.

"When the original plans for the second phase of the Ammanford relief road were drawn up a zebra crossing had been planned.

"I have had a meeting with the highways department and raised the concerns of my constituents and am waiting to hear back from them to see what can be done."

Carmarthenshire Council operations manager John McEvoy said: "A site investigation has been carried out by the operations manager and the accident research and prevention engineer and I will be making a report to the transportation manager this week."
