SIXTY-THREE Remploy workers in Brynaman and Ystradgynlais have been left shell-shocked by the news that their factories are to close.

Devastated employees were informed at a meeting Tuesday lunchtime and spoke immediately of the utter devastation the announcement had caused.

Remploy specialises in providing jobs for people with a wide range of disabilities. An offer of work at one of the company's factories in Baglan is on the table, but many could now face voluntary redunancy.

Ceri Jones, a shop steward at the Brynaman factory, admitted the entire workforce had been left devastated.

"We had expected an announcement to be made, but we didn't expect it to be this," said Mr Jones, who has worked at the factory for seven years.

"We thought the factory would be safe but it's disgusting that they have tried this because we have people who have been here for more than 30 years."

GMB trade union regional organiser Jeff Burns slammed the decision, saying the unions would not be accepting the new proposals without a fight.

County Councillor for Brynaman, Elwyn Williams, admitted the news had come as a huge blow to the community.

"It's all well and good them saying there are jobs available in Baglan but how are they supposed to get over there? The quality of work coming out of the Brynaman factory was fantastic and what this now means is job losses, which is the last thing our area needs."

Adam Price MP and Rhodri Glyn Thomas AM also voiced their anger at the proposals, saying the cuts would have a major impact on the area.

"It could be very difficult for people with a disability who are not used to negotiating public transport to seek employment," said Mr Thomas.

Welsh Liberal Democrat AM for Brecon and Radnorshire, Kirsty Williams, said: "I was saddened to hear the news about these closures, and my thoughts are with the employees and their families at this difficult time."
