A VISITOR to the Amman Valley was arrested after he asked police for the quickest way to get out of Betws, a court has heard.

Anthony John Rees, of 24 Elizabeth Street in Llanelli, was taken into custody after officers were called to the Treforis estate in Betws around 1.10am on May 17.

Prosecutor Beth Thomas said it was the second time they had been called to the street that night and on both occasions the 26-year-old had been the reason.

"Officers were called to an address in Treforis at 12.20am because the defendant was outside a house shouting and swearing.

"He was clearly very drunk.

"At 1.10am police were called to another disturbance on the estate and arrived to find the same man there.

"They asked him to leave but he started arguing, bedroom lights were coming on and they tried to get him away from the area.

"He walked around 30m towards Ammanford but then turned around again and headed back."

Miss Thomas said he was arrested and told it was for a public order offence to which he replied "So what? That's only going to cost me £30."

The prosecutor added that Rees became more and more abusive towards the police officers and was so disgusted by his foul-mouth tirade refused to divulge exactly what he had said.

"He spoke to them like no person should ever speak to another human being," she said.

Defence solictor David Elvy accepted the prosecution's version of events but said his client was following police instruction before realising he didn't know where he was going.

"He is not from the area so he simply turned around to ask officers which way he should go," he said.

Rees pleaded guilty to a charge of harrasment, alarm or distress and was fined £150 and ordered to pay £60 costs.
