GLANAMAN residents have won their fight for a pedestrian crossing on Grenig Square.
Carmarthenshire County Council deputy leader and Glanaman councillor David Jenkins announced the news that residents will finally see a crossing installed after Cwmaman town council, along with support from the local authority, had won its safe routes to school funding bid.
Cllr Jenkins said: “This has been a community effort, from Cwmaman town council clerk, David Davies, to the community at large who have fought long and hard to make this happen.”
Back in January, village residents upped their campaign for a crossing in a bid to improve safety on the busy Cwmaman Road after parents described children “dicing with death” each time they send them off to school.
A bid was submitted to the Welsh Government’s Safe Routes in Communities Scheme, which funds projects such as crossings.
The bid included questionnaires filled in by residents where they expressed the need for a crossing.
Cllr Jenkins said: “Special thanks goes to everyone who signed the petition and filled out forms that were placed at Ysgol y Bedol.
“The number of signatures and support shows just how concerned the public have been and the need for the crossing.
“Back in 2012 the crossing was part of my manifesto promise and I am pleased, thanks to a community effort, to see it finally happen.”
The safer routes to school scheme will also see improvements to Folland Road.
Cllr Jenkins said: “Folland Road is a long and traitorous road and although there will be some improvements there is still more work to be done, particularly on the sharp bend.
“If re-elected I will push for further improvements.”
Fellow Glanaman councillor and local resident Emyr Jenkins said he is sure the news will be warmly received by the people of the area.
He said: “It just shows what perseverance and teamwork for the benefit of the whole community can achieve – well done everybody who took the time to campaign for the crossing.”
