A newly-formed Armed Forces charity has been offered land near Cross Hands to provide a secluded getaway for veterans.
SA1UTE was set-up by co-founders Reeco Rees, Carl Dent, Royal Marines Colour Sergeant Lee West and former Royal engineer Paul O’Dwyer around two months ago to help struggling former servicemen and women.
The group took to social media to appeal for a free plot of land where they can set up an activity centre for veterans and fell lucky when Denise and Lee Bass, from Pontarddulais, stepped forward.
Colour Sgt Lee West said: “Reeco posted an appeal on Facebook for anyone who has any plot of land available and a couple replied to offer us three acres of land free of charge near Pont Abraham roundabout.”
Once up and running the charity hope to set up the activity camp and buy several canoes for veterans to use on a river which runs through the land.
“Our aim is to create a military-style camp site with temporary wooden fixtures which we can use for camping and for people to learn practical skills,” said Lee, who is also part of Trampface and lives on the street for a week each year to raise money for veterans.
“We want to create a place where people can make memories.
“When I was younger I used to go camping with my dad and I couldn’t wait to tell my friends in school about my trip.
“We are not limiting anyone to using these facilities and we will be in touch with Help for Heroes and the British Legion to see if they have any members who would like to visit the facility.”
After spending months looking for a plot of land, Reeco would like to thank Mr and Mrs Bass for their help.
He said: “I am extremely grateful to Lee and Denise for lending us this plot and without them this project would not happen.
“We are looking forward to getting up and running as soon as we become a registered charity and get the relevant insurance.”
SA1UTE are hoping to get the activity centre this summer.
