AN AMMANFORD carer who stole more than £2,000 from a pensioner has been handed a suspended sentence.

Sharon Fediles, of Norman Road, Ammanford, appeared at Swansea Crown Court after she was charged with committing theft and fraud.

The 41-year-old admitted stealing over £2,000 from a 70-year-old resident at the care home she worked for in Ammanford.

Dean Pulling, prosecuting, told the court the elderly resident was “bed-bound and had suffered a stroke”.

Fediles was a senior carer at the care home and had worked there for 14 years.

The court heard that the elderly woman had kept her handbag in her room and her daughter was given permission to use her bank card.

Ten transactions were made on eight different dates between July and August last year, totalling £2,240. The defendant was taking £250 at a time.

The care home was notified that money was discovered missing and the defendant later confessed in October and was arrested.

Mr Pulling told the court that the defendant had returned to the Philippines in February, but was unable to return until April, due to the coronavirus outbreak.

“She was impacted financially,” he said.

He added that the victim’s family was “shocked” to discover who had taken the money.

Defending, Tom Scapens told the court Fediles felt remorse for what she had done and should be given credit for her admission.

Fediles was handed a six month sentence, suspended for two years. She was also ordered to carry out 180 hours of unpaid work and pay a surcharge of £128.
