CARMARTHENSHIRE MP Jonathan Edwards has joined forces with County Councillor Ann Davies to call for a cycle path between The Mansel Arms pub, Drefach and Porthyrhyd.

The local politicians said that a mile of cycleway between both locations would be the missing link in a cycle path that could link two of Carmarthenshire’s biggest attractions, the Millennium Costal Park in Llanelli and the National Botanic Garden of Wales.

Currently a cycleway links the Millennium Coastal path to Tumble, Drefach and the Mansel Arms.

A cycle path links the village of Porthyrhyd and the Botanic Gardens, however there is an absence of designated cycling area between the Mansel and Porthyrhyd. Around a mile of new cycleway would be needed.

Cllr Ann Davies, who represents Llanddarog Ward on Carmarthenshire Council, said: “Many local residents have contacted me to highlight the need for a cycle way between Porthyrhyd village and the Mansel Arms.

"The section is the missing link in a pathway that would link two of our county’s major attractions, the Millennium Coastal Park in Llanelli and the National Botanic Garden in Llanarthne.

“As well as the wider strategic route, a cycleway on this section would provide a safe route between the villages of Drefach and Porthyrhyd.

“I was delighted to welcome Jonathan Edwards MP to visit the Mansel Arms to discuss the issues with proprietor Glynn Bennetts.”

Cllr Hazel Evans, Carmarthenshire Council's executive board member for environment, said: “We will soon publish a list of proposed active travel routes that have been identified as part of our ongoing Active Travel consultation - this will allow us to further explore their potential and viability for funding.

"In the meantime we are funding a feasibility study to support decision-making around a possible future scheme linking Porthyrhyd and Mansel Arms.

"We are committed to developing a high impact, high quality Active Travel network across Carmarthenshire that will connect our communities and welcome all feedback and ideas.”
