Barclays Bank in Ammanford is closing down permanently this afternoon.

The College Street branch will close its doors at noon today (Friday, August 6) for the last time, with customers asked to use other Barclays branches or a local post office from now on.

Announcing the closure in May, a statement from Barclays said "it had identified that only 157 customers use the Ammanford branch exclusively for their banking".

Adding: “The number of counter transactions has gone down in the previous 24 months, and additionally 82 per cent of our branch customers also use other ways to do their banking such as online and by telephone.”

Customers will now have to find alternative banking methods.

However, alternative banking provision is available to local residents at post office branches nearby.

The nearest post offices to the closing Barclays bank, Ammanford branch are:

  • Ammanford Post Office, 4A Quay Street
  • Penybanc Road Post Office
  • Tycroes Post Office, Ammanford Road

Each of these branches offers banking services - including deposits, free cash withdrawals and balance checks, as well as offering face-to-face access to government services, bill payment, foreign currency, travel insurance and, of course, postal services.

Ruth Buckley-Salmon from The National Federation of SubPostmasters, said: “Post offices are proving vital to retaining people’s and business’s access to cash as the banks continue to desert the high street in order to cut costs and increase their profits.

“Every post office plays a vital role within the heart of the local community. Post offices provide a reliable and essential service which has continued at a high standard across the whole of the UK throughout the pandemic.”
