Cwmamman United will look back on a second half period where they failed to convert one of half a dozen chances as a key contributor to defeat in their Ardal South Cup tie with AFC Llwydcoed.
With both first choice keepers out, Nathan Mcneil put on the gloves for Cwmamman and while not tested too much during the match he put in an assured performance, which allowed Cwm to control the possession from the back for periods of the game.
The first half did not see many chances, with the best opportunity being when Calem Rees lobbed the keeper, only to see it go just over.
Defences were on top and young Nathan English at full back, making his first start, was very impressive in a back four with the experience of Gareth Howarth, Nathan Davies and Elian Evans.
The second half saw more energy from both sides and there was a 25 minute spell where Cwm created a raft of chances. Ryan Thomas saw his shot well saved and Ryan Hurlow following up fired just over, while Thomas saw two shots from the edge of the box whistle past the post.
Kyle Ashford also went on a strong run and fired wide of the target, as did Cam Isaac after playing a neat one-two.
As the game came to an end Ryan Hurlow was brought down to great excitement which soon petered out when the referee who had appeared to give a penalty gave a free kick on the edge of the box.
Llwydcoed held their nerve in the penalty shootout and, despite a great save by McNeil, emerged 4-2 winners.
Cwm will return to league action at Grenig Park on Friday as they entertain Swansea side West End (7pm).
