An exciting exhibition has opened in Mimosa Art Gallery, Llandeilo featuring the work of renowned artist Andrew Douglas Forbes.
Andrew showed early promise as an artist and honed his skills at Swansea Art College where he also expanded his artistic knowledge. It was here that he came under the influence of his friend and mentor, Pat Briggs.
He also benefited from the tutelage of the Canadian/ Welsh painter, Gordon Stuart who emphasised the philosophy and handling of paint as opposed to how to make a work of art. This led to Andrew’s unique approach to creating an artwork which is to lay down layers of abstract paint and develop forms which 'emerge' into a finished piece.
His work is displayed in the collection at the Glynn Vivian gallery, Carmarthen and many private collections worldwide. He has also exhibited across the United States from New York to San Francisco, and widely in the UK.
In addition to his skill as an artist, Andrew is a scholar of the Royal College of Music, a tenor and lived in Tuscany for some time singing opera professionally before eventually moving back to Wales to focus on his painting.
For this current exhibition he has drawn his inspiration from the architecture of his adopted town, Llandeilo, including, interestingly, the rooftops. Also featured in the exhibition are works by Rhian Nest James and Sally Wakely.
The exhibition runs until mid October.
