It was built by the miners of Brynamman in 1932 and quickly became a venue that was loved, used and admired by the whole community.
Now Brynaman Lido looks set to return to public usage following Carmarthenshire County Council's decision 'in principle' to transfer it to the care of the community.
"We've got a long way to go and a great deal to do but, if everything goes according to plan, the lido should be open in two to three years," said Brynaman Lido committee secretary Judi Hughes.
"The people of Brynamman are always so supportive of everything that takes place and I know how keen they are to see the lido fully restored and becoming an important part of community life once again. We can't wait."
Brynaman Lido closed for the final time in 2010 and since then has seen a gradual decline as a result of hard winters, storm damage and general wear and tear.
"We've estimated that it's going to take at least £1m to restore, which is rather ironic when you consider that it take a million litres of water to fill," said Judi. "But we're determined to do everything we can to make it happen."
Once the lido is signed over to the committee, they will be able to apply for Lottery Funding as well as other grant funding measure which the local authority doesn't have access to. They have set up a donations page on their website, a crowdfunding page is in the process of being established and they also considering a share offer scheme which will mean that the lido will enjoy community ownership once again.
"Once the lido was built by the miners, the people of the town grew to love it," concluded Judi. "It wasn't just a place where they could swim but a place where they could meet, chat and enjoy themselves. And it's wonderful to think that before very long, this will be happening all over again."
