A popular Cwmamman footpath which became impassable as a result of dense undergrowth is once again open to walkers.

The path leading from Cwmamman Road to Station Road has for many years been a popular route for dog walkers and locals who use it as a short cut to the Ger yr Afon residential area and Amman Valley Hospital.

But several years of neglect has resulted in the track becoming overgrown with brambles and thick undergrowth and consequently it became impassable to walkers.

“It’s great to see it back in action,” commented a delighted and recently-elected county councillor, Emyr Rees.

“I used to walk the footpath regularly as a child but it wasn’t until recently, when a few people mentioned that it had become overgrown, that I realised something had to be done to get it re-opened.”

And so last Wednesday Cllr Rees contacted the staff at Carmarthenshire County Council to ask for the path to be cleared, and two days later it was open for business.

“It was pretty remarkable, to be honest, at how quickly the work was done,” he said.

“Maybe the council are trying to encourage more people to get out walking, but I’m chuffed to bits that it’s finally been done.”
