A community mosaic has been unveiled in Ammanford, celebrating the Marsh Fritillary and its connection to the town.
The mural, which can now be seen on the Old Cross Inn on Quay Street, was specially commissioned to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Ammanford Lions Club.
People gathered on Quay Street, as the streets were packed for the unveiling of the mural on Thursday, July 7.
Artist Dani Lee explained how work from the town’s mining community helped ensure the Marsh Fritillary’s common sightings across Ammanford.
“The miners chose to keep very small fields that were just big enough to graze a pit pony or a cow.

"And this was the ideal habitat for a wildflower called the Devil’s Bit Scabious, which has a lovely purple flower which is what the Marsh Fritillary thrives on.
"So as the butterfly sadly started to die out in other parts of the UK, it remained a very common sight around the fields of Ammanford.”
Dani’s art workshop Dani Lee Arts held several sessions where people attended and helped create the community mural.
Learners from Ysgol Bro Banw helped make some of the ceramic tiles seen on the mosaic.
“It’s been a great community event as it’s brought so many people together to work towards creating something for their town,” said Dani.
