A Penygroes fish and chip shop will be giving away free soup to members of the community across this half term week.

Mel’s Chippy on Waterloo Road will be offering free cups of soup for anyone, young or old, who wishes to take part in the scheme.

It will be available between Tuesday, November 1, and Saturday, November 5, from 12pm onwards.

Sarah from Mel’s Chippy said: “We wanted to offer something to everyone, not just the children, during the half term week.

“We do have quite an older community around this area, so it would be great for some of them to come down and join us.

“Even after three years since the pandemic started, socialising as normal has not gone back to the way it was, so we would love to see some of the isolated members of the community out and interacting.

“It’s much more than a cup of soup, what we are doing. It’s about getting people together in our community in these uncertain times.”

After the shop announced the scheme was to be taking place over half term week, other local businesses across the region got involved.

Sarah continued: “I spoke to the people at Evans Estates and Penygroes Happyness, who were more than happy to support us. They have both donated a lot of money towards the scheme.

“They both said that times were tough for them, as they are for a lot of local businesses, and they were unable to put something like this on directly ourselves, so they wanted to help the community through us.

“Their donations will go a long way in getting plenty of soup and soup packaging for the half term week ahead.”

She finished: “It’s lovely to have this much support from the people of Penygroes.

“Times are difficult for small businesses in this current economy, but at the end of the day, it is our community which keeps our doors open, and we just wanted to give something back to ours.”
