On a wet and windy morning at the Gwendraeth Drefach welcomed their local rivals Ammanford in the league.
This was always going to be a tough encounter as most of the players are school friends but today on different sides of the trench.
Drefach defence in the shape of J Thomas, T Bull, S Rhys and H Thomas only conceding two own goals and a penalty all season but they would have to dig in deep today.
Midfield Trio of AJ, J Davies and the return of D Rees worked their socks off in the middle and made it very difficult for the talented Ammanford midfield to create anything.
However it was the visitors who seemed to create more of the chances but were often stopped with L Jones who was dominant and marshalling the nets.
In a very scrappy half chances were few but a breakthrough from Ammanford saw a 1 to 1 on Jones who pulled off an incredible save keeping the game level at half time.
The second half saw D Morris, C Thomas and D Davies enter the fold who were raring to go.
E Morgan, L Thomas and I Bull worked hard up front all through the first half but Ammanford looked solid in the back and hard to break through.
Throughout the second half the game was still a battle but around 15 mins from the end Drefach started to get the upper hand and started to look more threatening with J Davies finding some cunning passes to the front men.
After a couple of attempts from I Bull, Morris and Morgan there was a goal mouth scramble that saw the very cool Morris appear like a ghost and slot the ball low into the side net.
This boosted the hosts who were now up a gear.
They continued to press and were unlucky not to grab a couple more.
With the final minutes approaching the game got tense and Ammanford broke only to be denied by the solid defence and Davies.
A nailbiter of a game that could have gone either way this was a real true local derby with passion, sweat and commitment.
Even though Drefach were the victors, credit must be given to an excellent Ammanford side who were a real threat throughout.
Next week Drefach welcome Johnstown at the Gwen in what should be another good battle.
