A new local escape room facility has received the Chairman’s Award from Ystradgynlais Town Council.

The chairman of the town council, Cllr Martin Donnelly, visited Valley Escape, located at the Cwmtwrch Welfare Hall, and made a contribution from his municipal budget.

Cllr Donnelly was impressed by his visit to the escape room on Thursday, October 27, seeing all the work which had gone into the community project over such a short space of time, and seeing what the project had given to the local area.

Following his visit, the town council chairman contributed £250 to the not-for-profit organisation.

The group, all of whom are musicians, initially got together in 2015, and formed a band with the aim of raising funds for local charities and causes.

A spokesperson from Valley Escape said: “Over the next four years, we raised thousands of pounds, but the Covid pandemic stopped us in our tracks.”

During the pandemic, the group found out about their shared love of escape rooms, and came up with the idea of opening one locally to also raise funds for multiple charities.

Valley Escape opened in July this year, and aims to provide education and recreation to groups of individuals and pupils in and around the community through the challenges, focusing on team building and problem solving.

The organisation also participated in the Welsh government’s ‘Summer of Fun’ scheme across last summer.

The scheme saw 100 children and young adults between the ages of 9 and 21 working in teams to solve logic puzzles and complete games and tasks as they tried to escape from the room within a time limit.

The escape room spokesperson added: “Valley Escape was set up as a community project and has benefited from a diverse mix of local talents, from a recently graduated designer to a Syrian refugee family involved in the setup on ongoing running of the room.

“The room has attracted school groups, friends, families and holidaymakers.

“We are delighted that the Cwmtwrch Welfare Hall have offered us a room to turn this dream into a reality.”
