Ynysygerwn 3 Cwmamman United 2

On a bitter cold evening spectators at the Llandarcy Academy of Sport ground were treated to a match to warm the cockles as Ynysygerwn and Cwmamman provided a thrilling match that ebbed and flowed throughout.

With Ynys looking for points to move to the top of the table and Cwm needing points to move away from the bottom six it was always going to be well contested and Cwm made the perfect start when a long ball over the defence saw Calem Rees speed away and slot it past Luke Jones in goal.

Cwm then kept the pressure and saw Sion Dafydd Williams and Keiran Richards come close.

Ynys then settled and started to the play the ball confidently from the back and a short pass to Dan Lewis with his back to goal saw him turn and find space which he quickly dispatched confidently.

The rest of the half saw the patient style of Ynys creating a number of half chances while Cwm with Charlie Davies prominent were breaking quickly with Harrison Thomas and Cory Saunders in support out wide causing problems but it stayed 1-1.

The second half saw Ynys have a lot more possession but Callum Dougal, Grant Rees and Ronan Templeton at the back were working hard to repel goal attacks.

Then in the 54th minute, Nathan Davies for Ynys was tripped as he turned in the box and he calmly put the penalty away for the lead.

Cwm pushed to get back in the game quickly and equalised in the 59th minute when Sion Dafydd Williams managed to squeeze a shot in at the far post.

It didn’t stay like that for long though when a corner was headed downwards in the Cwm box and with the Cwm defence hesitating Lewis tapped it in for his second and what proved to be the winner.

Kai Rees had to make a couple of strong saves and Cwm rang the changes from their substitute bench with Kyle Ashford creating problems but a big final 10 minutes could not quite get the equaliser.

A deserved win for Ynysygerwn but Cwm came pretty close to at least getting a point in a good advert for the Ardal League.

This Saturday, Cwmamman have another tough match in the Ardal South West League as they travel to fourth-placed Penrhiwceiber Rangers, kick off 2.30pm.
