A LLANDOVERY man has been jailed for violently and sexually assaulting a teenage girl.

Phillip Andrew Williams, 48, from Llandovery, was jailed for more than 20 years after subjecting his victim to a 12-hour ordeal.

He abducted the teenager in the night of Tuesday, August 2, stealing her mobile phone and holding a screwdriver to her neck.

Williams forced her to drink alcohol and take cocaine – a class A drug – before tying her hands together and raping her in a field in the Llandovery area.

The ordeal continued for the teenager when he dragged her to a stolen vehicle, physically assaulted her and then drove to Margam Country Park whilst under the influence.

Here, he tried to drag his teenage victim towards a mountain, but she managed to grab her phone and flee, alerting the police on the morning of Wednesday, August 3.

When officers arrived shortly afterwards, the victim was found covered in mud and extremely distressed. She told officers what happened and took them to the scene of the initial attack. This allowed the force to find evidence to support her description of the attack, including her trainers and underwear, the screwdriver and a length of blue rope submerged in the wet mud.

Officers from both Dyfed-Powys and South Wales police forces began hunting for Williams who was located and in court within 36 hours.

He faced seven charges: Inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, three counts of raping a female aged between 13-15 years, kidnapping and sexual assault of a female under 16 years.

The ordeal was not over for his teenage victim however, as he pleaded not guilty to all charges, meaning she had to go through the trial at Swansea Crown Court from Monday, January 23. After a five-day trial, he was found guilty of all charges, with the jury deliberating for just 40 minutes.

Dyfed-Powys Police praised the victim for her bravery throughout the investigation and subsequent trial.

DI Dale Thomas, senior investigating officer at Dyfed-Powys Police, said: “Williams somehow thought he could get away with what he did but thanks to the efforts of the investigating team and the bravery of the victim, following a five-day trial, the jury returned unanimous guilty verdicts on all charges in just 40 minutes.

“The officer in the case, DC Jade Probert, worked tirelessly to prepare a complete and comprehensive case for court, whilst providing the victim with support and guidance throughout the process.

“We were able to ensure the victim didn’t have to go to court to give her evidence but the fact her attacker refused to accept what he had done would have no doubt added to the torment he had inflicted on her.

“I would like to commend the victim for the bravery she has shown throughout the investigation.”

Williams was back at Swansea Crown Court today – February 21 - when he was sentenced to 22 years in custody which was extended with eight years on licence for a total of 30 years.
