AN EVENT celebrating heritage skills will be held in Llandeilo later this month.

National Trust owned Newton House in Dinefwr will host a two-day event called Building Heritage: Celebrating Skill.

It will run on March 18 and 19 between 10am and 4.30pm each day, with a variety of talks on conservation, designs and restoration as well as expert speakers and demonstrations.

The first day will give an insight into the repair and conservation of historic buildings and traditional homes, focusing on heritage building skills.

It will be led by Nell Hellier, senior built heritage officer at Carmarthenshire County Council and will discuss stonemasonry, the conservation of Welsh historic buildings, leadwork, lime, plaster and traditional thatching.

On the second day, there will be a focus on decoration and design. It will be led by Rebecca Spooner, National Trust Cymru’s cultural heritage curator for south Wales, and focus on historic and contemporary wallpaper, decorative plasterwork, conservation of textiles and historic wooden bedsteads from the 16th and 17th centuries.

Marianne Suhr, chartered building surveyor, writer and broadcaster, is one of the experts at the event. She said: “I am delighted to be returning to Dinefwr, the place where my career in old buildings first began.

“I am looking forward to sharing some of the wonderful experiences that I have had in the world of building conservation.”

The event takes place on Saturday, March 18 and Sunday, March 19 between 10am and 4.30pm. The café will be open on both days between 10.30am and 3.30pm, offering fresh food and drinks.
