A FIVE-HECTARE grass fire near Llandyfan was put out in around two hours by fire crews this afternoon (Tuesday, April 18).

Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service was called to a grass fire at around 12.17pm.

Crews from Ammanford, Amman Valley, Carmarthen and Llandeilo attended the scene.

South Wales Guardian:

On arrival, the firefighters said that around five hectares of grass was well alight.

They used two hose reel jets, a wildfire blower and beaters to extinguish the fire, remaining on scene to monitor and respond to hotspots before leaving around 2.12pm.

The fire service recently reformed Operation Dawns Glaw, a multi-agency taskforce of specialists from across Wales who are committed to reducing and eliminating the impact of grass fires in Wales.

In 2022, Wales’ fire services attended 3,269 grass fires – an increase of 62 per cent on 2021.

Deliberate grass fires have also seen a 47 per cent increase from 721 in 2021 to 2,263 in 2022.
