A MONTHLY comedy night that allows local comedians to test out new material is being held in July in Ammanford.
The night, called Comedians New Material Night, will see a number of comedians take to the floor of Has Beanz Coffee Bar on Thursday, July 6 to test out new material.
It is hosted by Gareth P Morris who organises a number of comedy nights in Carmarthenshire after spotting a gap in the provision.
At the event in July, there will be routines from Gareth CN Rees, Mike Hall, Kyle Davies, Rebecca Jones, Daf Jones-Morris, Sam Rees, Chrissy Derbyshire, Gerwyn Evans, Darren Daniel TTKW, Mike Frayne and Aled John.
“This is for anyone to have a go at stand-up comedy,” said Gareth. “It’s had really good feedback from folk wanting to build their self-confidence and try something new.”
Gareth has been running the nights – including two monthly showcase nights at The Salutation in Llandeilo and The Tinhouse in Llanelli – for just over a year and has hosted a number of Glee Club and The London Comedy Store acts as well as locals wanting to try out their new routines.
“During the pandemic, I created comedic videos of myself and my baby daughter as the family couldn’t see her,” he said of his inspiration to host these nights.
“These were well received and validified that I could potentially write comedy material.
“Once lockdowns began to lift, I started attending musicians open mic nights in Carmarthenshire, just to tell the jokes I’d written.
"I found Carmarthenshire had a very sparce grassroots comedy scene in the area, so I ran our first New Material Night for all to attend and try in February 2022.
"This only had four acts participate – Tommy Smith, Ash Jones, Aled John and Sam Rees – not including myself.
“Since then, the night has erupted, and I regularly get 10-15 acts per month coming along. We’ve also had themed nights, with a female focused comedy night, a dark humour night and a Star Wars themed night.”
The next Comedians New Material Night will be held at Has Beanz Coffee Bar on Thursday, July 6. Doors open at 6pm with the fun beginning at 7pm.
Entry is for those aged 16+ and free, with a donation bucket inside. To find out more, visit This is a Stand Up on Facebook.
