AN Amman Valley primary school raised £2,000 for the school and a special charity by cycling the length of Wales’ coast.
Pupils, parents, staff from Ysgol y Bedol, former rugby international Shane Williams and Carmarthen East & Dinefwr MP Jonathan Edwards took part in the fundraising challenge, which was to cycle the distance of Wales’ coastal path on Friday, June 30.
The Garnant school’s headteacher Gethin Richards told the South Wales Guardian that pupils cycled 602.9 miles and raised £2,000.
He said: “It was a great event that brought the whole school and community together.
“We cycled 602.29 miles and raised £2,000 for the school and the charity Hands up for Downs.
“Children, parents, local celebrities such as Jonathan Edwards MP and Shane Williams took part in the challenge.
“As well as being a ‘fun event’ it also raised awareness in the children of keeping health and the joy of cycling!”
Mr Edwards said: “It was a pleasure to join the pupils, parents and teachers and help contribute to the ambitious target they set. It was great to see the children enjoying themselves on the Watt bikes and I am glad that I managed to complete the 10 miles expected of me!
“Safe to say I was glad to have a bit of a rest in my constituency surgeries following the ride. I would like to congratulate all involved and I am sure the pupils will benefit greatly from the funds raised.”
The money raised for the school will help to provide pupils with more experiences and activities to enhance their education and to support the Swansea-based charity Hands up for Downs.
