A NEW leadership team has been appointed to continue the 42-year twinning between Llandeilo and the town of Le Conquet in Brittany.
Llandeilo has been twinned with the town for the last 42 years and every other year, the Llandeilo Town Twinning Association travels to the partner town, with representatives from Le Conquet coming to Llandeilo in the years between.
The association’s AGM was recently held where there was a new leadership group elected. Linda Durgan was elected as the new chairwoman, with Colin Jenkins as the vice chairman. Edward Thomas was named treasurer, Susan Bennett as secretary, Brena Vautier as social secretary and Llandeilo’s mayor Christoph Fischer has been named as press secretary.
Outgoing chairman Tim Greenish said: “New members usually don’t take long to feel part of the group.” Tim was a member of the association for just a few years before becoming heavily involved in the organisation of the association.
Every year there is a week of wine and cheese socials, excursions, meals, music and dancing events including tympath and Breton dancing. Outgoing secretary Neil Craven – who is one of the more recent members of the association and one of the youngest committee members – said: “The group might be getting older, but their spirit certainly isn’t.”
Speaking on his involvement in the association and being twinned with Le Conquet, Christoph said: “I had no idea how beautiful Le Conquet and Brittany are, and how welcoming our Breton friends are.
“Forget everything media stereotypes teach you. My trip last year was absolutely wonderful.”
The group recently dressed up for Llandeilo Pride and joined the parade and took part in a ferry lunch in Plymouth after an invite from Brittany Ferries. There, they were able to meet some of their counterparts from the Breton town on board.
There will be a French themed food and quiz night coming up as well as French lessons for members.
Social secretary Brenda said: “The fun we have in Le Conquet and the warmth we encounter there is quite a unique cultural and travel experience. It is an experience we would like to share with more people from Llandeilo, especially younger ones.”
