A LOCAL MP is urging the Welsh Government to ensure that supermarkets are supporting Welsh produce.
Jonathan Edwards – who represents the Carmarthen East & Dinefwr constituency which will make up most of the new Carmarthenshire seat at the next general election – is backing the National Farmers Union (NFU)’s campaign calling for supermarkets to add ‘Buy British’ tabs to their websites.
Mr Edwards has joined the call and emphasised the importance of supporting Welsh farmers and producers during the difficult time.
He has asked for the Welsh Government to make known any discussions it has had with supermarkets about supporting local farmers.
Mr Edwards said: “I am all in favour of improved food labelling in order for consumers to make the most informed choices as possible about where their food comes from.
“I have previously highlighted in the House of Commons that the post Brexit environment isn’t favourable to our farmers. As policymakers we need to promote domestic food production or we will become increasingly reliant on imported food.
“As the Member of Parliament for Carmarthenshire I am a proud representative of a very large and predominately rural constituency. It is vitally important that our excellent local and national produce are recognised and championed.
“I have therefore written to the Welsh Government to ask what discussions they have had with supermarkets about adding ‘Buy Welsh’ tabs to their websites. This would provide an innovative way to further build the profile of our wonderful Welsh food and support the Welsh agricultural sector.”
