A local swimming pool is set to close this year to protect public safety.
Neath Port Council have been approached to shut down Pontardawe Swimming Pool in August because of its declining condition.
In 2022, the 50-year-old pool was predicted by building experts to have a maximum lifespan of two years.
Furthermore, the repairs needed are non-fundable due to the worn-out mechanical and electrical services in the building.
Last January, further deterioration of the pool’s reinforced concrete was noted in a meeting held by Neath Port Council’s cabinet members.
Therefore, it is possible the pool will close earlier than August if ongoing regular inspections deem the facility more unsafe.
However, due to the council’s aims of promoting an active lifestyle, a £10-12m investment into a replacement pool is in discussion.
This includes a feasibility study analysing external funding sources, suitable locations and a future facility mix in Pontardawe.
The planned closure of the existing pool will allow time to redeploy staff and make changes to the Neath Leisure Centre programme for most displaced users.
If the replacement pool is approved, further discussions will occur with nearby authorities who can provide replacement facilities for residents.
