A visually impaired woman will go down a zip wire in memory of her husband who died from heart failure.
Nicola Mattocks lost her husband (Paul Mattocks) of 39 years last November, who died at the age of 65.
On June 27, Nicola is booked in at Aberdare zip wire for 11:30am and is hoping to raise money for the British Heart Foundation.
She said: “I was always with him. It’s been a complete life change. You don’t know what’s around the corner. A year ago, life was good. We were going to go on cruises together.
“I’ll be scared to do the zip wire, but nothing is more scary than losing the person you’re going to spend the rest of your life with. He had his faults, but he was perfect. Even though he knew what buttons to press, love conquers all."
On her JustGiving page, Nicola also wrote: “Paul was my whole life, my first love, my soul mate, my best friend and my one true love who I will love and miss forever.
“He had battled courageously with heart problems for over 18 years, but he was unable to win his fight against heart failure.
“He fought bravely up until the end and the final words he spoke were to tell me he loved me.”
Nicola will be doing the zip line challenge alongside a visually impaired friend named Lyn Thomas.
Lyn is raising money for the visually impaired club in Ammanford and is completely blind.
He said: “I am very excited. I would do anything for charity. Every penny counts for this club. I’m nervous for the zip wire challenge. I’m saying to myself ‘Don’t look down’, but I can’t see anything anyway.”
However, this isn’t the first time Lyn has completed a challenge for charity.
Lyn continued: “I’ve raised money for Dementia, Alzheimer’s, Air Ambulance and the BBC before. I walked from Ammanford to Brynamman. I would do anything for charity. I’m hoping to raise money and bring everyone out for dinner.”
Both Nicola and Lyn attend the visually impaired club – an organisation dedicated to providing social opportunities in the community.
The club takes place every Tuesday from 2pm to 3:30pm at Ammanford Evangelical Church.
