A tumble dryer caused a fire in a Carmarthenshire home which resulted in a ground floor kitchen being ‘completely destroyed’.
On July 18 at 10:58am, fire crews attended an incident at a semi-detached property in Burry Port.
Firefighters were forced to use six breathing apparatus sets and three hose reel jets to extinguish the blaze.
A spokesperson for Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service (MAWWFRS) said:
“Crews from Llanelli, Port Talbot and Kidwelly Fire Stations were called to an incident in Burry Port.
“Crews responded to a fire within the ground floor kitchen of a semi-detached domestic dwelling.
“The fire was caused by a tumble dryer and crews utilised six breathing apparatus sets, three thermal imaging cameras, three hose reel jets, one hydrant and small gear to extinguish the fire.
“The property’s kitchen was completely destroyed by fire. Crews continued to monitor for hotspots before leaving the scene at 1pm.”
Following the fire, MAWWFRS have issued the following reminder about tumble dryers and white goods safety:
- NEVER leave appliances unattended - don’t turn your tumble dryer on before you leave the house or go to bed. Tumble dryers contain powerful motors with fast-moving parts that get very hot.
- Don’t overload your tumble dryer or put items in that have been used to soak up flammable liquids including cooking oil.
- Don’t ignore warning signs - if you can smell burning or have clothes that feel hotter at the end of the cycle, have your appliance checked by a professional.
