Firefighters from Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service turned into rescuers whilst on a charity mountain climb.

The 12-strong team was taking on the Welsh Three Peaks Challenge, which involves climbing Pen y Fan, Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon), and Cader Idris within 24 hours, to raise funds for the Fire Fighters Charity and Hywel Dda Health Charities.

But while descending Yr Wyddfa, the team came across Jack Smith, who had injured his foot and couldn't walk.

With at least three miles remaining until they reached the base of the mountain, and the risk of Jack and his friends being stranded in the dark, group manager Phil Morris and on-call firefighter Darren Davies decided to carry him to safety.

Initially, they tried using a tonne bag they found on the mountain, but the rocky terrain made this impractical.

Instead, they took turns giving Jack a piggyback ride to the base of the mountain.

The rescue took place on Friday, September 6, during the team's 17-mile trek with an ascent of 2,334 metres.

MAWWFRS said that the pair demonstrated 'exceptional bravery and commitment to safety.'

The team is still raising funds through a JustGiving page.

Any donations to support their efforts for the Fire Fighters Charity and Hywel Dda Health Charities would be greatly appreciated.
