A councillor has expressed his anger after his notice in motion for the Ammanford ‘masterplan’ was rejected by Carmarthenshire Council.

Councillor Kevin Madge challenged the council to prove there was a plan in place to invest in Ammanford and improve the town.

His request comes after Councillor Alun Lenny, cabinet member for resources, claimed there was an intention to rejuvenate Ammanford at a previous county council meeting.

Mr Madge said: “It’s obvious now there is no masterplan. Members of the council have no input in the so-called masterplan. I spoke to businesses and to the town council and no one knows what’s going on.

“If you’re not consulting the public, how can you claim there is a masterplan. I have challenged them to publish a masterplan. For the last nine years, no one has had any input in Ammanford.

“At Carregamman Car Park they planted new trees around it, but now all the trees have died. They are giving peanuts to Ammanford. I’ve exposed them. There is no member of the council working on a masterplan.”

“I think that’s unacceptable. I went to the council meeting to be open. They are spending million of pounds in other areas. I’m just asking for Ammanford to have a share of the cake.”

This follows a couple of high-profile purchases made by the county council this year in Carmarthen, such as buying a former Wilko store and the transformation of a former Debenhams shop into a health and wellbeing hub.

Mr Madge continued: “They have had many years to work on this masterplan. Only £100,000 was given to the Amman Valley which is a drop in the ocean compared to other investments.

“This has been going on for nine years. There should be a working group of members including businesses and residents in Ammanford.”

The need for cohesion in Ammanford was echoed by MS Adam Price last month.

Mr Price claimed a forum is needed where all ideas could be brought together and to figure out what level of investment is required.

He also expressed how residents of Ammanford have the enthusiasm and drive to help make a difference.

In contrast to Carmarthen, Ammanford has seen numerous high street shops close over the last few years.

Furthermore, some buildings like the Ammanford Miner’s Theatre are suffering from a lack of adequate facilities.

Carmarthenshire County Council were approached for a comment.
