A group made up of people with dementia from the Ammanford area is continuing to grow and has plans to help remove the stigma surrounding the condition.

The group, which meets regularly, is now a year old and is keen for more people to join.

Looking back over the past year, the group feels proud of its achievements and is hopeful for future progress.

The group has taken steps towards educating the public about dementia.

Members have made presentations to Llais on the subject of productive communication with dementia patients and attended the North Wales Dementia conference to advocate for research promoting the independent living of dementia patients.

The group has also broadened its activities.

They now engage in a range of activities from traditional board games to virtual reality headsets, allowing them to explore interesting places worldwide from Ammanford.

Their most recent activity was an awareness day held at the Ammanford Tesco store.

The day allowed the group to have numerous productive conversations with interested customers.

The group distributed literature about living well for as long as possible after a dementia diagnosis, stressing the importance of early diagnosis.

As the warmer weather approaches, the group plans to set up an information stall at Ammanford's Friday street market.

They are also working on a training course for local shops and businesses.

This course aims to educate staff about dementia, and how they can assist patients in their goal of living independently for longer.

The group is encouraging anyone who may benefit from being part of this community to come forward and join them.
