A Carmarthenshire couple has celebrated 30 years of fostering.

Brett and Wendy began their journey with Carmarthenshire County Council in 1994, after moving from Gloucestershire with their two children in 1984.

Wendy, a childminder with experience in a specialist school for disabled children, approached the council about fostering once their children were settled.

Since then, they have fostered 32 children.

Until recently, both Brett and Wendy worked full-time alongside their fostering commitments, with Wendy's school job allowing her to care for their foster children during holidays.

The couple's ability to welcome sibling groups into their home has been a significant part of their success as foster carers.

Wendy said: "We’ve been lucky enough to be in a situation of being able to take sibling groups, which can be much better for the children in your care."

In addition to fostering, the couple adopted two brothers, who are now in their thirties.

Their daughter, Emma, moved back in with her family in 2008, creating a multi-generational household.

Their grandchildren have been particularly helpful in welcoming foster children into the family.

Wendy and Brett treat every foster child as part of their family, involving them in all activities from holidays to everyday gatherings.

They encourage the children to try new activities and build their confidence.

The couple also emphasised the importance of staying local, praising the support of the local authority.

Wendy said: "We’ve found staying with our local authority important as we’ve had consistency with staff – some of whom have been there as long as us."

The couple has supported children through significant life transitions, including a young person from the age of 11, who they helped through school, bereavement, college, and into independent living.

Brett and Wendy have also fostered babies who have been adopted, finding joy in knowing they have given the children a strong start in life.

Their dedication to fostering has not gone unnoticed.

Councillor Jane Tremlett, cabinet member for adult social services and children and families for Carmarthenshire County Council, said: "Brett and Wendy’s story is a shining example of the difference foster carers can make.

"Their dedication over the past 30 years has touched the lives of so many children and young people in Carmarthenshire.

"We are incredibly grateful for the love, care, and stability they’ve provided to children in need."
