A charity is set to help 75 children from families affected by domestic abuse.

The Calan Domestic Violence Services (DVS) charity, based in Ammanford, will be able to support the children after receiving a £55,000 grant from South Wales Freemasons.

The children are from families who have experienced domestic abuse and have chosen to stay together.

The charity will use the funding to pay for a children and young people's worker to support the delivery of Calan's Inspiring Families Programme, which was developed by Rockpool.

The programme aims to develop trust and motivation in the non-abusive parent so they have a better understanding of the impact the abuse has had on the family.

It encourages parents to examine their parenting role, how they have been prevented from nurturing their children, and the healthiness of their intimate relationships.

It also provides a framework for professionals to assess the parent's behaviour, including any disguised compliance and the level of current and future risk.

The programme helps to strengthen and stabilise families and supports separation if families decide they want to leave the relationship during the programme.

A main aim of the programme is to empower the voice of the children.

The continued funding will allow the charity to continue to address the impact of living in an abusive household on the children.

The children and young people's element of the project, called Listen and Hear Me, provides enhanced care and support to children aged six to 18.

It incorporates the views, experiences, and behaviours of the children within the family assessment and helps them to understand what is going on in their home, the impact it has had on them, and how they cope with and respond to situations.

Each child and family are given tailored support plans to help them build self-esteem, resilience, coping strategies, and to form positive lifestyles and healthy relationships.

Michelle Whelan, chief executive of Calan DVS, said: "We’re very grateful to South Wales Freemasons for their generous grant, which will significantly enhance our ability to assist more children and young people impacted by domestic abuse.

"Thanks to them we will continue to provide vital resources and support to children and families, helping them to overcome the challenges they face and to build safer, brighter futures."

Robert Payne from South Wales Freemasons, said: "I’m very pleased we’ve been able to help Calan DVS with their hugely important programme helping children and families who have gone through domestic abuse.

"It’s hard to overestimate the corrosive effect of violence and abuse on the lives of children and helping a family to stay together while tackling the causes of that abuse can be life-changing."

The grant from South Wales Freemasons is funded by Freemasons, their families, and friends, from across England and Wales.
