POLICE are seeking a teenage have-a-go heroine who sprang into action when a schoolgirl was allegedly attacked in the middle of Pontardawe on Wednesday afternoon.

The Guardian understands the girl intervened on seeing the 11-year-old grabbed by a man at Ffordd Parc Ynysderw between 3.30pm and 3.45pm.

One resident, who did not wish to be named, said: “I’m told this girl was on her way home from school when this chap caught hold of her by the arm down by the Paradise nightclub.

“It must have been a terrifying experience for the poor thing. But then this taller girl, dressed in a Cwmtawe school uniform, saw what was happening and just went steaming in.”

Now police are urgently trying to seek the mystery heroine, who disappeared from the scene after checking the 11-year-old was okay.

A police spokesman said: “We don’t exactly know what this girl did, but she somehow managed to get the younger girl away from the man.”

Detective Inspector David Rees, of Neath Port Talbot CID, said: “We urgently need to trace the girl who assisted the victim of this assault.

“We believe that she may be a Year Ten pupil at Cwmtawe Comprehensive School. We would ask her to contact the police immediately to assist our enquiries.”

A police spokesman confirmed a man named as Mark Clayden, of no fixed abode, was arrested near the scene.

He appeared before Neath magistrates on two counts of child abduction on Friday and was remanded in custody to Swansea Crown Court.
