POLICE and council officers are mounting an offensive on litter louts and inconsiderate dog owners in Llandovery.

The clampdown follows concerns that the town’s playing fields are being fouled.

Local policeman Howie Davies said a minority of dog-owners were to blame.

“Although we’re only talking about a handful of offenders here, the fact remains that dog fouling and littering are ongoing problems in Llandovery,” he told the Guardian.

“Not only is the fouling of playing fields extremely unpleasant – it also carries serious health implications.

“The litter problem is mainly in the castle car park and we are calling on people to show a bit more responsibility.”

Meanwhile, county council officers have disclosed a Llandovery business has been fined £100 for failing to store its waste in an appropriate manner.

The business, which cannot be named for legal reasons, must pay the fixed penalty notice within 14 days.

The council’s environmental enforcement officers were on patrol in the town on Saturday when they issued the fine.

Executive board member for the environment, Cllr Haydn Jones, said: “Businesses have a responsibility to ensure reasonable measures are taken to both store and dispose of their waste.

“Failure to do so could see them hit in the pocket, with fines running into thousands of pounds.

“Hopefully this fine will act as a warning to businesses throughout Carmarthenshire that we will prosecute those that flout the law.”

On the same day a man seen drinking from a can and then dropping it on to the ground was fined £75.
